Canterbury Choristers "in Residence" at St. John's June 8-10

Posted June 9th, 2009

The Canterbury Choristers combine choristers from the Chapel of St. John the Divine and Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal Church. Both parishes are affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music in America, an international organization dedicated to quality church music. This week St. John's is hosting the Choristers for an in-house training course, similar to the advanced courses offered by the RSCM. In essence, the Choristers are "in residence" at the Chapel this week, much like a visiting choir at a Cathedral in England.

St. John's Blesses the Plots on Rogation Sunday

Posted May 28th, 2009

On Rogation Sunday, May 17, a festive rite occured immediately after the 10:00 a.m. service, as the altar party led the whole congregation, followed by the choir in song, out the door and eastward a couple of hundred yards to the Morrow Plots. Prayer, hymnody, and a blessing express our ancient hopes for a good growing season on God's green earth. This year the gates of the plots were opened for us so that we could proceed inside the enclosure.
